Why the first five years matter

The foundation begins
before school feels like school.

Before children learn what to know, they are learning how to learn: how to trust, act, represent, imagine, collaborate, and carry an idea through.

A period of extraordinary growth

Early experiences become ways of meeting the world.

A warm response teaches that connection is possible. A reachable object teaches that action has an effect. A block used as a phone opens the door to representation. A shared game makes room for another person's idea.

These are not small achievements on the way to “real” learning. They are the foundation that later learning, relationships, and problem solving continue to build upon.

The brain's extraordinary early growth
≈26%of adult brain weight at birth
≈88%of adult brain weight by age five

These figures describe physical brain weight — not intelligence, maturity, potential, or the completion of development. Growth continues long after age five.

A continuous developmental path

Each new capacity opens the next possibility.

Development is not a checklist or a race. Children move at individual rhythms, revisiting earlier capacities as new ones become available.

0
Connection

“I am safe enough to engage.”

Responsive care, familiar voices, and predictable rhythms make exploration possible.

1
Agency

“I can make something happen.”

Movement, repetition, and simple choices help children experience themselves as capable actors.

2
Representation

“One thing can stand for another.”

Language and symbolic play let children hold an idea, name it, and share it.

3
Possibility

“What if?”

Imagination becomes a laboratory for stories, problems, materials, and alternate ways forward.

4
Collaboration

“My idea can meet yours.”

Children negotiate roles, revise plans, solve shared problems, and build real friendships.

5
Integration

“I can carry an idea through.”

Planning, language, self-regulation, and collaboration begin working together with greater continuity.

Beyond fiveThe foundation grows. Development continues.
Where the foundation travels

What children practice here goes with them.

01

Home

Expressing needs, taking initiative, joining family routines, and recovering after frustration.

02

School

Listening, wondering, persisting, representing ideas, and approaching the unfamiliar with confidence.

03

Friendships

Reading cues, negotiating, contributing, caring, setting boundaries, and repairing after conflict.

04

New problems

Imagining more than one possibility, testing an idea, noticing the result, and trying again.

Care makes children feel safe.
Purpose makes the day educational.

Young children should never have to choose between being deeply cared for and being deeply engaged. At TIF, those commitments belong together.

How TIF meets the moment

Belonging in the Playroom. Possibility in the Workshop.

Each Playroom offers an age-responsive home base where children feel known. Each Workshop opens a different way to think, move, communicate, investigate, create, and relate.

Together, they give development both warmth and direction — without turning childhood into a race toward the next grade.
